Our interdisciplinary team of researchers and practitioners study black bears in Maine and throughout their range to guide their management, understand their relationship with people, and develop solutions for human disease.

We conduct a variety of innovative field- and lab-based studies to answer the following:

How do the diets of bears change in response to the natural cycles, hunting, and agricultural production?
How do natural and anthropogenic foods effect the health, survival, and reproductive success of bears?
Can understanding the bear kidney help prevent or cure kidney disease in humans?
Why are some individual bears involved in conflict?
What diseases do bears carry?
